Written in an informal, anecdotal style with a sense of humor, this text discusses the latest research findings on the physical, psychological, sociological, and spiritual aspects of stress, and provides skills for coping with stress. Numerous self-evaluation instruments, offering students insight on themselves, are provided in the form of lab assessments at the end of all chapters. Part 1 covers scientific foundations of the stress reaction and its relationship to specific illnesses and diseases. The next three sections describe different types of interventions, such as relaxation techniques, perception interventions, and behavioral changes. Part 5 applies the stress management techniques previously discussed to specific populations, including students, workers, and family caregivers. An online workbook is included with the text. This edition includes 300 new references from 2005 or later, plus revised statistics. New and expanded topics covered include mindfulness, cognitive restructuring, meditation, sexual orientation, and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. Color photos and illustrations, many new to this edition, are included in a color layout. Greenberg is a Professor in the Department of Public and Community Health at the University of Maryland.
