Comprehensive patent citation database now available on the Internet.Research Inc. announced Wednesday that access to its multi-million dollar patent citation database is now available through the Internet. Going on-line with this database means that two general types of information are now available on the Internet. First, the database provides key information relating to relating to relate prep → concernant relating to relate prep → bezüglich +gen, mit Bezug auf +acc patent title, abstract, inventor INVENTOR. One who invents or finds out something. 2. The patent laws of the United States authorize a patent to be issued to the original inventor; if the invention is suggested by another, he is not the inventor within the meaning of those laws; but in that , ownership, etc., for approximately 1.7 million U.S. patents issued since 1975. Second, it tracks the lineage LINEAGE. Properly speaking lineage is the relationship of persons in a direct line; as the grandfather, the father, the son, the grandson, &c. of each patent -- how each patent is cited by any and all subsequent U.S. patents. Approximately 10 million patent citations are contained in the database. This latter point is of considerable import. According to according to prep. 1. As stated or indicated by; on the authority of: according to historians. 2. In keeping with: according to instructions. 3. Francis Narin, president of CHI (Computer Human Interface) Typically refers to the devices and associated applications used by humans to interact with computers. For example, a CICS data entry screen displayed on a 3270 terminal makes up a CHI for a banking application. Research, "All patents are not alike. Most are, in large part, enhancements built upon previous patents. Some rely only minimally on predecessors. A rare few actually break entirely new ground and form the foundation for inventions that follow. "Through analysis of how patents are cited in the development of later patents, one can identify the technological significance of specific inventions, and in turn, the contributions and potential of the developers. This can and has provided key information in the areas of industrial competitive assessments, R&D area assessments, technology transfer, mergers, acquisitions and cross licensing." Citation information has ramifications ramifications npl → Auswirkungen pl for the financial community. Through technology indicators data, portfolio managers can determine the technological strengths and weaknesses of corporations worldwide -- data that is vital to assessing the probability for the long term growth of a business or industry. The database, which is the result of a joint effort between CHI and the Community of Science in Baltimore, has extensive search field capabilities. It is fully searchable by combinations of all fields, for example, key words in title, abstract, classification, assignee assignee (assign) n. a person to whom property is transferred by sale or gift, particularly real property. (See: assign) ASSIGNEE. One to whom an assignment has been made. 2. , inventor, and dates. Minor variations of names under which companies patent are standardized standardized pertaining to data that have been submitted to standardization procedures. standardized morbidity rate see morbidity rate. standardized mortality rate see mortality rate. in the program making a company search that much more simple. The database is free for the next two weeks at the World Wide Web location http://cos.gdb.org/repos/pat/pat-intro.html. Subscription fee for one year's unlimited access to this database is $500 for individuals, somewhat higher for corporate accounts. Its patent citation analysis Citation Analysis is the most common method of bibliometrics. Citation analysis uses citations in scholarly works to establish links to other works or other researchers. Co-citation coupling and bibliographic coupling are specific kinds of citation analysis. tools provide an understanding of the technological strengths, performance and potential of inventors, companies, industries and nations.
