COMPOUNDING SUPPLIERS' DATA SHEETS

Compounding, Blending and Drying Equipment for Plastics Processing Plastics processing

Those methods used to convert plastics materials in the form of pellets, granules, powders, sheets, fluids, or preforms into formed shapes or parts.
 

Paul O. Abbe equipment has been proven during decades of use in the production of plastics.

For example, Rota-Cone [R] vacuum dryers are being used for vacuum drying vacuum drying

Removal of liquid material from a solution or mixture under reduced air pressure, which results in drying at a lower temperature than is required at full pressure.

Any process in which monomers combine chemically to produce a polymer. The monomer molecules—which in the polymer usually number from at least 100 to many thousands—may or may not all be the same.

Vacuum Drying

Materials such as polyurethane, polyethylene, fluorocarbons, ABS, PVC PVC: see polyvinyl chloride.

Synthetic resin, an organic polymer made by treating vinyl chloride monomers with a peroxide.
, etc. are quickly and safely dried by Rota-Cone vacuum dryers. For most applications, they offer gentle, effective drying. Final moisture levels can be as low as 0.0001%.

Large, coarse, angular rock fragments associated with lava flow that are ejected during explosive volcanic eruptions. Although they may appear to resemble sedimentary conglomerates, agglomerates are igneous rocks that consist almost wholly of angular or rounded
 in other types of vacuum dryers. Plastics for which the Rota-Blade dryer is being used include polyester, polyethylene and PVC.

High Temperature Processing

For both polymerization and drying of polymers, the Rota-Cone vacuum dryer can be equipped to operate at temperatures as high as 600 deg F, with vacuum down to 0.2 torr torr (tōr),
n a unit of pressure equivalent to 0.001316 atmosphere; named after the physicist Torricelli. Also called
mm Hg.

In a recent application, Paul O. Abbe supplied a 120" diameter Rota-Cone unit with a 500 cu. ft. operating capacity and a processing temperature of 450 deg F.

Vacuum dryers for high temperature processing can be supplied in a range of capacities from 0.3 to 500 cu. ft.

Compounding

Many companies use Paul O. Abbe Rota-Cone blenders for blending and coloring materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene. Typically, a 10,000 lb batch can be processed in about 20 minutes in a 10 ft diameter unit.

Rota-Cone blenders can be obtained in operating capacities of 0.2 to 500 cu. ft.

Paul O. Abbe ribbon mixers also find wide application in mixing and compounding. Some processors use our ribbon mixers in the production of PVC resins and copolymers. Here, resins are blended with plasticizers and stabilizers. Jacket heating is then utilized to dry the compounded material.

Others use the ribbon mixer to uniformly disperse small amounts of colorants throughout, for example, a large batch of cellulose acetate.

Deaeration Deaeration is the removal of air molecules from another gas, usually steam, using a deaerator. Deaeration also refers to degasification, the removal of dissolved gases, such as oxygen, from liquids.  

Manufacturers of plastisols use Paul O. Abbe ribbon mixers to gradually add dry ingredients into the liquid contents of the mixer during operation. After mixing, the blender operates under vacuum to deaerate Verb 1. deaerate - remove air or gas from
de-aerate

get rid of, remove - dispose of; "Get rid of these old shoes!"; "The company got rid of all the dead wood"
 the mix.

We have units of this type in the field in sizes from 5 gal to 550 gal.

Heating/Cooling

Jacketed heating and cooling ribbon mixers are used both singly and in tandem during plastics processing. In some cases, Paul O. Abbe heating mixers are used to prepare PVC dry blend in extra large batches in order to assure product uniformity. In other installations, ribbon mixers are used for the efficient cooling of hot resin from high speed mixers.

Occasionally, a piggy-back heating/cooling unit is called for. Here, a heating mixer is mounted above a cooling mixer. The PVC blend is first processed in the upper heating mixer, then directly discharged into the cooling mixer below.

Ribbon mixers are offered in operating capacities from 0.12 to 200 cu. ft.

Milling/Mixing

One example of the use of ball mills in plastics processing would be their use in the grinding and mixing of the dry powders that are used in the production of melamine melamine (mĕl`əmēn'), common name for 2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazine. Melamine is a trimer (see polymer) of cyanamide, H2NC≡N, and is synthesized from calcium carbide.  dishware.

Another recent example is in the processing of thermosetting plastic epoxy.

Ball mills are available in lab sizes up to 3000-gallon working capacity.
