Two performances by the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities.  Repertory Dance Company, a Faculty Artist Series recital and a band concert are scheduled in the coming week at the University of Oregon School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave.

Dougherty Dance Theatre

The Repertory Dance Company will give two performances featuring new works by guest choreographers Tiffany Mills and Gabriel Masson and by UO dance faculty.

Masson created a new work with the company in a weeklong residency last November. Mills set an excerpt from her repertory during the first week of winter term in January.

Concert time is 8 p.m. in the UO's Dougherty Dance Theatre. Tickets are $10 ($5 for students and senior citizens) at the door.

Tuesday, Beall Hall

Music by UO composition professor Robert Kyr will be featured Tuesday in a Faculty Artist Series concert titled `Elements of Time and Wonder.'

The six pieces on the program blend the experimental and the mainstream, Eastern hemisphere Eastern Hemisphere

Part of the Earth east of the Atlantic Ocean. It includes Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. Longitudes 20° W and 160° E are often considered its boundaries.

The concert will feature several UO faculty performers - including Kyr himself as a soloist - and the vocal ensemble Sospiro.

Selections include:

"Voices for Peace," a setting of a well known prayer by St. Francis.

"Echoes of Memory," a duet for flute and alto flute The alto flute is a type of Western concert flute, a musical instrument in the woodwind family. It is the first extension downward of the C flute. It is characterized by its distinct, mellow tone in the lower portion of its range.  written in memory of civilians who have perished during the Iraq wars.

"Elements of Time and Thunder," a suite of five movements for soloist and chamber orchestra, including gamelan gamelan

Indigenous orchestra of Java and Bali and, more generally, of Indonesia and Malaysia. A gamelan usually consists largely of gongs, xylophones, and metallophones (rows of tuned metal bars struck with a mallet). Gamelan polyphony is complex and many-voiced.

The Oregon Wind Ensemble

Wednesday, Beall Hall

The Oregon Wind Ensemble, directed by Professor Robert Ponto, will perform Wednesday.

The program includes `Song' by William Bolcom; `Sanctuary' by Frank Ticheli; `Divertimento' by Vincent Persichetti; and the premiere of `The Big Bang' by Andrew Houchins, featuring percussion soloist Tracy Freeze. Instructor Patrick Carney and teaching fellow Torrey Lawrence will guest conduct two of the selections.

The concert is at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall. Tickets are $5 ($3 for students and senior citizens) at the door.
