ComplianceVault for SMBs: data preservation in the world of e-mail retention and search/retrieval.

In the face of new compliance regulations, the sorting and archiving of e-mail can be an enormous task for any IT manager. Several larger solutions have been introduced for corporations, but the high ticket price has not been cost-effective for smaller businesses.

Intradyn has sought to fill this need, introducing Compliance Vault, its scalable 'data preservation' unit, as a multifunctional, all-in-one way to sort and archive e-mail for SMBs. Compliance Vault is offered in a price range that smaller businesses can afford. The unit connects directly into a network via LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  cable and then through SCSI SCSI

to a Sony AIT-2 WORM tape drive. The Compliance Vault unit is rack mountable and retrieves e-mails directly from a mail server using a custom e-mail client Same as e-mail program.  on a continuous basis, from an unlimited number of mailboxes. It maintains only one copy of any attachment avoiding duplicates and wasted storage space. The "random-access reference volume" (disk subsystem) is rewriteable magnetic disk storage used for quick search and display of messages, as well as access to e-mail attachments A file that rides along with an e-mail message. The attached file can be of any type. E-mail programs make it easy to attach a file. For example, in Eudora, all you do is select Attach from the Message menu, browse through the folder hierarchy to find the file you want and then double . It works with Microsoft Exchange Messaging and groupware software for Windows from Microsoft. Exchange Server is an Internet-compliant e-mail system that runs under Windows NT/2000 and Windows Server 2003. It can be accessed by Web browsers, the Exchange client, versions of Outlook and the earlier Windows Inbox.  and Intradyn claims any IMAP IMAP - Internet Message Access Protocol  or POP3 e-mail server See mail server.  as well. When attached to a company's network, all e-mails are continuously saved and indexed to disk and then archived and indexed to tape--making them immediately available for retrieval in a manner compliant with the user company's corporate policies, as well as with industry regulations.

An easy to use web interface accessible from anywhere on the Internet gets pretty close to painless when it comes to configuration and tracking. Compliance Vault compiles a report of all archived and sorted e-mails that it sends to the IT manager at specified intervals.

Overall, ComplianceVault is easy to install and have up and running in just a few minutes; configuration and archive reporting are straightforward and the cost should be reasonable for most SMBs.
