 AMR (1) (Adaptive Multi-Rate) A variable rate speech codec selected by the 3GPP for the 3G evolution of the GSM cellphone system (WCDMA). Using the Algebraic CELP (ACELP) compression technology, AMR provides toll quality sound at transmission rates from 4.75 to 12.  Research, companies will spend $5.5 billion in 2004 to meet Sarbanes-Oxley requirements mandated by the federal government for public companies--specifically, requirements related to Section 404, which directs public companies to disclose their financial information. Of that total, nearly $1 billion will be spent on IT, which should prompt chief information officers to take a leading role in Section 404 compliance discussions.

 corporate practices, AMR says compliance will only become a bigger issue for companies. In a recent AMR survey, 60 of the 69 companies polled said their IT-related spending on compliance issues would increase in 2005.
