LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 10, 1998--

Leading Hollywood Production Facility Purchases HDTV (High Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards that offer the highest resolution and sharpest picture. Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates  VTRs, Switcher, Monitors

Panasonic Broadcast & Digital Systems Company (PBDSC) has announced a sale to Complete Post, Inc., a Hollywood, CA post production facility, for the purchase of a complete Panasonic HDTV post production editing and effects system.

Complete Post will purchase six AJ-HD2700 1080 Interlace/720 Progressive switchable D-5 High Definition VTRs with AJ-DFC2000 480P down converters; an AV-HS3100 1080I post production switcher (complete with Digital Video Effects Visual effects created in the computer that provide interesting transitions from one scene to another rather than just switching frames. They include fading or dissolving the frame, wiping one frame over another and flipping the frame. Jeff Klein, Co-President, Complete Post, said, "It is absolutely imperative that our facility have the ability to work today on a television program being done in 720 progressivescan, and then the next day easily switch to work on a 1080 interlace To illuminate a screen by displaying all odd lines in the frame first and then all even lines. Interlacing uses half frames per second (fields per second) rather than full frames per second.  production.

"Panasonic's D-5 HD format, with the switchable AJ-HD2700, was the key to our decision; it provides us the flexibility to quickly edit material shot in HDTV or programming transferred from film. And Panasonic is providing a complete HDTV package -- VTRs, full-featured switcher with DVE See digital video effects.  and keyer, and 16:9 monitors -- that all operate in a multiple-image environment."

Robert Mueller, President, PBDSC said, "A significant hurdle for many post production facilities in purchasing HD technology is the array of format choices being offered. This array creates the potential for either short equipment life cycles, or the requirement of multiple devices, each capable of a different ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) An international digital television (DTV) standard adopted by the U.S., Canada, South Korea, Taiwan and Argentina.  format. Panasonic is committed to providing Complete Post with an affordable path from today's 1080I/60fps standard to the next generation of high definition recording technology.

"The leading-edge Panasonic HDTV equipment that Complete Post has purchased today allows them to take a market leadership position among Hollywood post facilities."

Klein added, "The Panasonic HDTV products are brand new models that we expect will provide outstanding service, but everyone knows that HDTV technology is in its infancy and advancing at a rapid pace. What's new today, won't be new two years from now.

"Panasonic has agreed to be our partner, providing us with a vital and viable upgrade path to future HDTV technology," Klein continued. "Our return on investment from the Panasonic equipment is related to the number of years we can use the equipment. Our agreement with Panasonic provides Complete Post with the upgrade path that extends the useful life of this purchase."
