) today announced that the company has entered into an agreement with NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
 Corporation to help build their APBASE application framework. The APBASE framework supports an environment that enables NEC strategic initiatives such as its Core Banking product, which CBSI is also developing. The framework will also be used for a portfolio of future applications.

NEC expects to invest about $85 million to design, develop and deploy the APBASE project and the next generation banking software.

APBASE development will be carried out at CBSI's offshore development center in Chennai, India, and onsite at the customer's location in Tokyo. It will be done on HP's Unix platform using C, C++ and popular middleware Software that functions as a conversion or translation layer. It is also a consolidator and integrator. Custom-programmed middleware solutions have been developed for decades to enable one application to communicate with another that either runs on a different platform or comes from a  like BEA's Tuxedo and IBM's MQ Series products. Some components will also be developed on Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  using Microsoft Visual C++.

NEC's Middle Software Division is responsible for APBASE and other components of their distributed application An application made up of distinct components running in separate runtime environments, usually on different platforms connected via a network. Typical distributed applications  architecture -- called OpenDIOSA.

Before entering into the agreement with CBSI, senior managers at NEC's Middle Software Division evaluated CBSI over a period of nine months. The evaluation included scrutinizing all aspects of CBSI's organization including financial stability, growth potential, technical skills, project management capabilities, quality processes and commitment to a long-term relationship. The evaluation process also included executing pilot projects, which provided an in-depth assessment of the skills, performance and quality of deliverables in middleware technologies. All of these efforts culminated in the selection of CBSI as their development partner for APBASE development.

The CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast. ,India development center will be linked to NEC's facilities in Japan using a dedicated high-speed satellite link. It will help to create a development and testing environment that is a virtual extension of NEC's own center in Japan.
