Competitive Technologies signs agreement to help license speed enhancement process for Internet image transmission developed at Dartmouth College.

) will help license a new image technique that speeds graphic transmission on the Internet by 2 to 5 times, George M. The new process, developed at Dartmouth College, achieves speedier image transmission performance in part by eliminating time-consuming re-transmission delays by shielding portions of an image through redundancy bits.

Dr. Peter Holden, vice president of International Venture at CTT, noted that World Wide Web users are familiar with the slow, cumbersome process of downloading images. "The Dartmouth technique achieves much speedier image transmission performance than the conventional Internet protocol, TCP (1) (Transmission Control Protocol) The reliable transport protocol within the TCP/IP protocol suite. TCP ensures that all data arrive accurately and 100% intact at the other end. , and is adaptable to various compression schemes," he said.

Under the terms of the agreement, CTT will assist Dartmouth in licensing efforts. Dr. Holden commented, "Our technical and market expertise in this field provides an excellent platform on which to commercialize Dartmouth's image transmission technique and a number of interested third-parties have already been identified."
