Competition Bureau will not challenge sale of Coles to SmithBooks.

Businesses:
  • Coles Supermarkets, a supermarket chain in Australia
  • Coles Group, (formerly Coles-Myer) owner of Coles, Target, Kmart, Harris Technology Officeworks and many other large chains in Australia, partner in Coles
 Book Stores Limited to FICG Inc., the owner of SmithBooks, will not be challenged by the Director of Investigation and Research of the Bureau of Competition Policy. The Competition Bureau conducted an extensive review of the proposed sale ensuring that all interested parties had an opportunity to express their views,

Southam believes the Director's decision not to challenge the sale is the right one and is very pleased with this decision.

Southam and FICG will now proceed with completion of the sale by early April.

Details of the transaction price and terms were not disclosed. Southam will retain a minority interest in the new company.
