Group survey of over 600 wireless DA users, Directory Information Services See Information Systems.  (DIS(sm)) will one day prove to be a major component of the developing wireless information services market. DIS, Concierge, and Alert services go beyond today's Enhanced DA to provide a broad spectrum of new consumer information services. The study, entitled en·ti·tle

See TQM.  for the rapidly evolving directory information services markets. These new services are being proposed at a time when traditional landline 411 Directory Service is waning and a new non-traditional competitor, the Internet search engine, is poised to thrive.

Al Fross, President of The PELORUS Group, notes "CTIA (1) See CompTIA.

(2) (Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association, Washington, DC, www.ctia.org, www.wow-com.com) A membership organization founded in 1984 that is involved with regulatory and public affairs issues in the wireless industry.
estimates that there are 201 million wireless users in the U.S. Our data suggests that about 53% of them have used wireless 411 Directory Assistance service in the past twelve months. This equates to an estimated 107 million users. These 107 million Directory Assistance Telephone Number Inquiry users are ultimately the target market for all the Enhanced DA services, Directory Information Services, Concierge services, and Alert services. The DIS revenue market potential associated with this large pre-existing base is substantial, well in excess of $2 billion."

The research examined seven proposed DIS services:

--Driving Directions With Visual Mapping

--Business Type Locator LOCATOR, civil law. He who leases or lets a thing to hire to another. His duties are, 1st. To deliver to the hirer the thing hired, that he may use it. 2d. To guaranty to the hirer the free enjoyment of it. 3d.

The survey also offers detailed insights into usage characteristics and plans concerning basic wireless DA and wireline DA, versus emerging alternatives. For instance, the research examined user preferences between 411 Directory Assistance and wireless Internet Search Engines (i.e. Google or Yahoo). Search engines were preferred by 47% of the users while only 28% preferred wireless 411 DA.

The study found that awareness of emerging DIS services was low. Indeed, service adoption correlated strongly with service awareness, suggesting that merely raising the level of awareness of the new DIS services could result in higher service adoption rates.
