Booth No. 1950

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 25, 2000

Compatible Systems Corporation, the industry leader in hardware-based Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), today announced Virtual Router capabilities for the company's line of IntraPort Carrier VPN Access Servers. The Virtual Routers will give service providers the flexibility and scalability to leverage a diverse customer base on the Carrier platform by allowing separate routing domains per customer.

&uot;Virtual Routers enable service providers to customize VPN services to meet the specific needs of each and every one of their customers,&uot; said Matt McConnell, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Compatible Systems. &uot;This solution further emphasizes Compatible's dedication to delivering the most flexible and scalable VPN products to meet the diverse requirements of our service provider customers. Service providers are faced with the continual challenge of improving margins and our virtual routing/IntraPort Carrier combination allows them to generate incremental revenue and increase customer loyalty by offering well differentiated services.&uot;

Within the Carrier platform, Compatible Systems' Virtual Routers allow network administrators to create a unique context for each customer, which includes choice of routing protocols, routing update policies, VPN tunnel mapping and logical interfaces to the platform's physical interfaces. Since each customer has their own virtual router, the Carrier platform now enables the service provider to seamlessly support numerous customers that have duplicate IP address ranges (which is common today due to the depletion of the public IP address availability and the subsequent adoption of RFC 1918 private IP addressing by many customers). This initial upgrade to the Carrier product supports up to 256 virtual routers per platform.

The IntraPort Carrier

The IntraPort Carrier is available in either a two or eight-slot chassis. The IntraPort Carrier 2 supports up to 10,000 VPN Client sessions and up to 1,000 site-to-site VPN tunnels. The IntraPort Carrier 8 supports up to 40,000 VPN Client sessions and up to 4,000 site-to-site VPN tunnels. Each StrongARM(TM)-based I/0 card features dual Triple DES encryption engines and a key manipulation accelerator. LAN/WAN LAN/WAN Local Area Network/Wide Area Network  interface options include 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, DS3 and High-Speed Synchronous Interface (HSSI (High-Speed Serial Interface) A serial interface with transmission rates up to 52 Mbps. It is often used to connect one or more LAN routers and network devices to a T3 line, which provides 44.736 Mbps. ), with OC3 ATM, OC3 POS (1) See point of sale and packet over SONET.

Numerous VPN groups can be assigned within each customer context on the IntraPort Carrier. The IntraPort Carrier is specifically designed to enable service providers to offer network-based managed VPN services to their customers, including VPN remote access and site-to-site tunnels between service provider locations and other off-network locations such as other ISPs.

The Compatible Systems IntraPort family of VPN Access Servers is a high-end line of VPN hardware solutions designed for large organizations and Carriers. All of the IntraPort products provide secure Internet-based remote access and LAN-to-LAN connectivity, with full routing capabilities. The line supports up to 40,000 remote client connections and up to 4,000 LAN-to-LAN connections, and includes PCI-based Triple DES co-processors, that dramatically improve throughput in high-level encryption applications.
