Compatible Systems Integrates T1 FT1 CSU DSU into Advanced MicroRouter Series; new routers feature built-in support for sync speeds from 56 Kbps to full T1, move Compatible Systems into high-bandwidth arena.BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 24, 1996--Small to mid-size companies can now get fractional T1 to full T1 routing performance from a single Compatible Systems hardware chassis. Four new products in the popular Advanced MicroRouter Series feature a built-in CSU/DSU See DSU/CSU. CSU/DSU - channel service unit/digital service unit supporting PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using connections over FT1 and T1 circuits as well as Frame Relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers. connections at up to T1 speeds. The routers represent significant additions to Compatible Systems' Internet Access See how to access the Internet. and Multiprotocol WAN product lines, packing a combination of high performance specifications, affordable pricing and built-in upgrade paths. "High-speed line costs are plummeting," says Matt McConnell, president of Compatible Systems. "There's no reason to purchase anything that limits your growth potential to a single technology or a connection speed that will be obsolete inside a year. That's the philosophy behind these new Advanced MicroRouter products." Mike Heylin, wide area networking analyst with Creative Strategies of San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden , says that the new additions to the Advanced MicroRouter Series will offer greater convenience and upgradability to customers. "This move shows that Compatible Systems is continuing to think of its small to mid-sized business users," Heylin says. "It's a `one-stop' solution that offers a broad level of functionality. It also establishes Compatible Systems as a stronger player in the high-speed marketplace." The new models add to two Compatible Systems product lines -- Internet Access Routers and Multiprotocol WAN Routers for private corporate WANs. MicroRouter 1250i/1270i Internet Access Routers The MicroRouter 1250 and 1270 Internet Access Routers are designed for connecting a corporate LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. to the Net through an Internet Service Provider Internet service provider (ISP) Company that provides Internet connections and services to individuals and organizations. For a monthly fee, ISPs provide computer users with a connection to their site (see data transmission), as well as a log-in name and password. . Both feature two WAN ports -- the CSU/DSU connection supporting synchronous transmission The transmission of data in which both stations are synchronized. Codes are sent from the transmitting station to the receiving station to establish the synchronization, and data is then transmitted in continuous streams. at rates from 56K to full T1/E1 and a synchronous/asynchronous RS-232C port supporting speeds from 28.8 Kbps to 256 Kbps. Both WAN ports may be used simultaneously, allowing remote user dial-in or multiple remote network and/or Internet connections. The 1250i provides one Ethernet port A socket on a computer or network device for plugging in an Ethernet cable. See WAN port. with a 10BaseT RJ-45 connector. For companies concerned with Internet security, the 1270i offers two Ethernet ports allowing users to create one public net with Internet servers while keeping all incoming traffic off of the corporate network. MicroRouter 2250R/2270R Multiprotocol WAN Routers Managers of private networks can use the MicroRouter 2250R or 2270R to create high-speed links between corporate locations as part of the Compatible Systems small enterprise solution. Both models feature dual WAN ports -- the CSU/DSU connection supporting synchronous transmission at rates from 56K to full T1/E1 and a synchronous/asynchronous RS-232C port supporting speeds from 28.8 Kbps to 256 Kbps. The 2250R includes one Ethernet port with a 10BaseT connector. Network managers can use the dual-Ethernet ports of the 2270R to route multiprotocol traffic over the Internet by tunneling IPX (Internetwork Packet EXchange) The network layer protocol in the NetWare operating system. Similar to the IP layer in TCP/IP, it contains a network address and allows messages to be routed to a different network or subnet. or AppleTalk in IP. They can also use physical LAN separation to create a "DMZ (DeMilitarized Zone) A middle ground between an organization's trusted internal network and an untrusted, external network such as the Internet. Also called a "perimeter network," the DMZ is a subnetwork (subnet) that may sit between firewalls or off one leg of a " net with restricted user access. Pricing and Availability Pricing on the new members of the MicroRouter series is as follows: MicroRouter 1250i: IP-only Internet access router. 1 LAN; built-in T1 CSU/DSU (56 Kbps to T1/E1); 1 additional Sync/Async WAN (28.8 Kbps to 256 Kbps); PPP and Frame Relay support. $1995.00 list. MicroRouter 1270i: IP-only Internet access firewall router. 2 LAN; built-in T1 CSU/DSU (56 Kbps to T1/E1); 1 additional Sync/Async WAN (28.8 Kbps to 256 Kbps); PPP and Frame Relay support. $2495.00 list. MicroRouter 2250R: IP, IPX, AppleTalk, DECnet. 1 LAN; built-in T1 CSU/DSU (56 Kbps to T1/E1); 1 Sync/Async WAN (28.8 Kbps to 256 Kbps); PPP and Frame Relay support. $2195.00 list. MicroRouter 2270R: IP, IPX, AppleTalk, DECnet firewall router. 2 LAN; 1 High-Speed WAN (56 Kbps to T1/E1); 1 Sync/Async WAN (28.8 Kbps to 256 Kbps); PPP and Frame Relay support. $2695.00 list. The new Advanced MicroRouter models will be available in July 1996. Software Features All of the MicroRouter models include both the PPP and Frame Relay wide area protocols and support dial-on-demand or dedicated operational modes. Comprehensive IP, IPX and AppleTalk access list security, and PAP and CHAP security profiles allow network managers to control incoming and outgoing traffic. As with all Compatible Systems routers, the new MicroRouter models include RouterView, a graphical management application for Windows and Macintosh. RouterView provides full configuration and management capabilities in a familiar, easy-to-use format. Management sessions via Telnet are supported. The routers also support SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. management with MIB (1) (Management Information Base) The hierarchical database used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP) to describe the particular device being monitored. MIB objects are identified using ASN.1 syntax. See SNMP, RMON, OID and ASN.1. II compliance for sets, gets, and traps.
