Advanced Telephony Features

Compaq's advanced telephony software allows users of Compaq's "Telephony-Ready" notebook computers to quickly and effectively use all the telephony features available in the SpeedPaq 288 Telephony Modem.

The SpeedPaq 288 includes a full-duplex speakerphone, providing simultaneous two-way voice connection for hands-free communication. In addition, its telephone answering machine provides an alternative to conventional message machines, making it possible to sort, view and file messages.

The switched voice and data feature enables transmission of data during a voice call without having to hang up and reconnect, allowing for more efficient time and resource management. For example, a user can remain on the line during a voice communication and temporarily mute the voice line while sending a file. Once the data is received, the users can continue the conversation and view and modify the file that was transmitted.

Extensive Cellular Phone Support

The SpeedPaq 288 continues Compaq's leadership as a premier provider of cellular data connectivity. The product enables users to communicate wirelessly on the road via licensed Direct Connect interfaces to Motorola, Nokia, Ericsson and other leading cellular phones. The modem features Enhanced Throughput Cellular (ETC ETC - ExTendible Compiler. Fortran-like, macro extendible. "ETC - An Extendible Macro-Based Compiler", B.N. Dickman, Proc SJCC 38 (1971). ) and MNP (Microcom Networking Protocol) A family of communications protocols from Microcom, Inc., Norwood, MA, that have become de facto standards for error correction (classes 2 through 4) and data compression (class 5). In 1997, Compaq acquired Microcom. 10 error correction protocols.

To protect users from high current lines, the SpeedPaq 288 also includes Digital Line Guard which helps to protect the modem and PC from damage when accidentally plugged into a digital phone line.
