Compaq announces first PCMCIA Ethernet Card; New card offers total network connectivity, full duplex capability and extensive driver support.


HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 22, 1996 -- In a move to provide portable PC users with a diversity of networking solutions, Compaq Computer Corporation (company) Compaq Computer Corporation - The largest US manufacturer and vendor of IBM PC compatible personal computers and servers. Compaq was started in 1982 by three ex-Texas Instruments employees.

) today introduced its first Ethernet PC Card. The new PC Card offers full duplex capability and extensive driver support allowing users of Compaq and other leading notebook computers to easily connect to any corporate network.

This product offers the total solution to portable PC customers by providing them with network connectivity in multiple locations with the flexibility of a PC Card.

 environments. The Compaq Ethernet LAN Card is the only PC Card extensively tested and optimized for use on Compaq computers. Additionally, PC users installing the Ethernet LAN Card on notebook computers other than Compaq are assured of the compatibility of the card with their equipment.

This Ethernet LAN Card is a PCMCIA Type II Card, IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  802.3 compliant, and supports connections to 10BaseT and 10Base2 networks. With a 16-bit data bus, a 32K RAM packet buffer memory, and an information transfer rate of up to 10 megabits per seconds, this Ethernet Card is one of the highest performing cards in the industry. The Compaq Ethernet PC Card also is one of the few PC Cards to feature full duplex operation which doubles the throughput by allowing the Ethernet PC LAN Card to simultaneously read and write data.

This new card includes DOS and Windows installation programs. It also is "hot swappable," allowing the user to remove and reinsert Re`in`sert´

Compaq's new PC Card is shipped with an extensive list of drivers, 10Base2 and 10BaseT cables, a BNC (hardware) BNC - A connector for coaxial cable such as that used for some video connections and RG58 "cheapernet" connections. A BNC connector has a bayonet-type shell with two small knobs on the female connector which lock into spiral slots in the male connector when it is twisted  T adapter for 10Base2, an installation guide, and a user guide on diskettes to install on your system to provide on-line assistance if required. Once installed, the user can operate the portable computer right away.
