This performance improvement will allow customers who use SAP's R/3 business application solutions on Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  platforms to run larger, more complex applications faster, enabling them to improve their processes and become more competitive. Enterprise customers can now enjoy a higher level of confidence and leading price/performance when deploying SAP's R/3 on NT.

The new world record achieved on Windows NT was 1,116 sales and distribution (SD) benchmark users for client-server solutions running SAP's R/3 Version 3.0 E on Microsoft Windows See Windows.

(operating system) Microsoft Windows - Microsoft's proprietary window system and user interface software released in 1985 to run on top of MS-DOS. Widely criticised for being too slow (hence "Windoze", "Microsloth Windows") on the machines available then.
NT 4.0 Server with INFORMIX OnLine Dynamic Server 7.20.TE1 database. This eclipses the previous record score by 19 percent and represents the first time any Windows NT and R/3 Release 3.0 SAP Standard Application SD benchmark has exceeded 1,000 benchmark users. The Compaq ProLiant 5000 application servers used in the benchmark recorded an average dialog response time of 1.92 seconds.

This performance capability further validates Compaq ProLiant Servers and Informix databases as a preferred platform for large R/3 environments. With nearly 50 percent of all R/3 Windows NT installations running on ProLiant servers, Compaq is clearly a market leader(a).

"The record-setting results achieved by the Compaq- Informix solution further demonstrate Compaq's ability to provide scalable enterprise solutions to all of our customers, from small-to-medium sized businesses to Fortune 500 companies," said John T. Rose, Senior Vice President and Group General Manager, Enterprise Computing Refers to information technology in the larger company. See enterprise data and enterprise networking.  Group, Compaq Computer Corporation. "Compaq was the first company certified for R/3 on Windows NT, the first to reach 1000 R/3 customer installations on NT and the first to demonstrate failover capabilities for R/3 using a preliminary version of Microsoft's Wolfpack clustering extensions. Compaq's leadership in R/3 for the Windows NT environment is a result of our strong relationships with SAP and Microsoft, and the investments we have made in building our SAP capabilities."

"These outstanding benchmark results underscore Informix's industry-leading database performance and Compaq's technology leadership in business-critical enterprise applications," said Kathy Gogan, Vice President, Global Partners at Informix. "Customers can now take advantage of the integrated Informix-R/3 solution, with its superior performance and scalability, throughout their enterprise on NT platforms."

The Benchmark Environment

The hardware configuration for the benchmark consisted of 14 Compaq ProLiant 5000 servers: one database server with four Pentium Pro The sixth generation of the Intel x86 family of CPU chips. The term may refer to the chip or to a PC that uses it. Introduced in 1995 as the successor to the Pentium, models from 150 MHz to 200 MHz were released.  200 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  processors, 2 GB of main memory and 189 GB of total disk space. Thirteen Compaq ProLiant 5000s, each with four-way Pentium Pro 200 MHz processors and 1 GB of main memory, acted as application servers, running SAP R/3 Release 3.0 E and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 1. Nine of the 13 application servers were used as dialog servers. The measured throughput was 337,000 dialog steps per hour. Three ProLiant 5000s acted as update servers and one ProLiant 5000 was used as the message and enqueue Pronounced "en-q." To place an item in a queue. Contrast with dequeue. See queue and queuing.
