Jointly developed by Compaq and Integrated Computing Engines (ICE) of Waltham, MA, the Compaq Acceleration Server technology loads World Wide Web pages two to three times faster(a), enabling users to have a more satisfying and efficient Internet experience with their current modems over standard telephone lines.

The Compaq Acceleration Server technology tackles the Internet's thorniest problem: poor response time for World Wide Web browsing. In virtually all instances of Internet usage, network bandwidth constraints impede the quality of the Internet surfing experience. Consumers are confronted with intolerable delays using low-bandwidth modem connections. The Compaq Acceleration Server technology will offer a unique combination of hardware and software that compresses graphical web content near real-time and will solve this problem by enabling faster throughput and relieving network congestion In data networking and queueing theory, network congestion occurs when a link or node is carrying so much data that its quality of service deteriorates. Typical effects include queueing delay, packet loss or the blocking of new connections. . The more graphical the web page, the greater the effect of the Compaq Acceleration Server technology.  offering this technology would enjoy a significant competitive business advantage.

In addition to vastly improving the home user's Internet browsing experience, corporate intranets can directly benefit from the Compaq Acceleration Server technology. Graphical web content currently impacts corporate networks, significantly impeding the performance of corporate intranets. The Compaq Acceleration Server technology is expected to reduce network congestion and to decrease the requirement for frequent network capacity upgrades.

In both situations, web users will be able to take advantage of this compression technology with a simple two-step process: they first install a browser plug-in A third-party software product, such as a search toolbar, that is integrated into a Web browser to extend its capabilities. A "helper application" provides similar capabilities to a browser plug-in, but runs as an external application and typically launches another window for viewing.  and then designate the server running the Compaq Acceleration Server technology as the "proxy" server for the download of web pages. The proxy server Also called a "proxy," it is a computer system or router that breaks the connection between sender and receiver. Functioning as a relay between client and server, proxy servers are used to help prevent an attacker from invading the private network.  may be located at an Internet Service Provider (ISP (1) See in-system programmable.

) site, a corporate proxy server or other Internet location.

The Compaq Acceleration Server technology is a powerful combination of Compaq's award-winning ProLiant x86/NT server technology tightly integrated with jointly developed Internet application software from Compaq and ICE, and hardware from ICE. Compaq and ICE are working to utilize this unique technology to add new levels of computing power to a range of compute-intensive Internet applications such as video conferencing See videoconferencing.

"We are working closely with telephone companies, and national and regional ISPs to develop the infrastructure and support systems necessary for Internet communities to thrive, and for commerce to flourish on the Internet."

In addition to today's demonstration of the Compaq Acceleration Server technology, Compaq has other initiatives in place as part of its strategy to provide breakthrough simplicity and reduced risk through industry-standard Internet solutions, enabling customers to transform Internet technology into a business advantage at the lowest total cost of ownership. These include:

-Compaq's support for NetCentric Corporation's Metered Services Information Exchange protocol that will enable ISPs to effectively meter and invoice the use of Internet applications and services such as video conferencing, fax, IP telephony The two-way transmission of voice over a packet-switched IP network, which is part of the TCP/IP protocol suite. Compaq Acceleration Server Technology Functionality

Compaq Acceleration Server technology is designed to provide advantages for both the home and business Internet user Internet user ninternauta m/f

. A user with a web browser The program that serves as your front end to the Web on the Internet. In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you.  and Acceleration Server browser plug-in software sends a request for a web page to a Compaq Acceleration Server. The Compaq Acceleration Server technology requests the web page from the content source web server. The web site delivers the uncompressed page contents to the server running the Compaq Acceleration Server technology which instantaneously compresses the images(b) and then forwards the compressed page to the user's web browser. The Acceleration Server browser plug-in software decompresses and displays the images. This process delivers pages two to three times faster than when Compaq Acceleration Server compression technology is not used.
