Compaq Taps Former Toshiba Executive to Head Up Portables Division; New Senior VP and GM Strengthens Compaq's Drive to the Top of the Portable PC Market.

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 14, 1995--Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today took a major step in its drive to reassert its leadership in the portable PC marketplace, announcing that Michael J. Winkler, a former top executive with Toshiba, will join the company as senior vice president and general manager of Compaq's Portables Division. Winkler will report directly to Compaq President and CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer.

Winkler, who was with Toshiba from 1991 to 1995, was vice president of Toshiba America Information Systems and general manager of the company's computer systems division. At Toshiba, Winkler had full responsibility for the company's portable computer and accessories business in the U.S. and Latin America. Winkler was previously with Xerox Corporation, where he was vice president and general manager of several of the company's product and business groups.

Winkler will join Compaq in November, and until that time Hugh Barnes, who currently heads the Portables Division, will continue in that role. In November, Barnes who moved to the Portables Division last year after heading up Compaq's Peripherals Division, will assume new responsibilities in the area of corporate technology.
