"The ProLiant 800 provides customers with levels of performance, scaleability, high availability and integrated management never before offered at this price point."

To simplify installation, integration and management, and lower total cost of ownership, the ProLiant 800 ships standard with intelligent and easy-to-use software tools and services. These include Compaq SmartStart, Compaq Insight Manager, Compaq Info Messenger and the hardware-based Compaq IRC.

Compaq SmartStart 3.2 optimizes configurations and simplifies the installation of tested and reliable servers by guiding customers or their resellers through network operating system An operating system that is designed for network use. Normally, it is a complete operating system with file, task and job management; however, with some earlier products, it was a separate component that ran under the OS; for example, LAN Server required OS/2, and LANtastic required DOS.  and other software installation processes. Compaq Insight Manager 3.2, an intelligent server and desktop management tool, proactively monitors and provides detailed information on server components and subsystems to keep systems running smoothly. Insight Manager also helps prevent problems before they occur by predicting impending hard drive, memory or processor failure. As part of the Compaq Pre-Failure Warranty, Compaq will replace, at no extra cost, Pentium Pro processors, ECC memory (Error-Correcting Code memory) A memory system that tests for and corrects errors automatically, very often without the operating system being aware of it, let alone the user.  and SCSI disk drives that are degraded to a specific level of performance before they actually fail.

Compaq IRC provides seamless remote console capability -- via modem -- for managing, from a centralized MIS location, ProLiant 800 servers located in remote/branch office sites. IRC operates independently from the host operating system operating system (OS)
