Compaq Names Dr. Robert Iannucci Vice President of Corporate Research; Research Headquarters Moving to West Coast to Strengthen Ties with Silicon Valley.

) announced it has appointed Dr. Robert Iannucci as Vice President of Corporate Research and that the company is relocating its Corporate Research headquarters from Maynard, Mass. to Palo Alto, Calif., strengthening its link with Silicon Valley resources.

In this position, Dr. Iannucci will have overall responsibility for Corporate Research, including the Systems Research Center, Western Research Laboratory and Palo Alto Advanced Development group in Palo Alto, Calif., Cambridge Research Laboratory in Cambridge, Mass., and Software Engineering Australia on the Gold Coast. He will report to Dr. Bill Strecker, Compaq's Senior Vice President of Technology and Corporate Development and Chief Technology Officer.

Dr. Iannucci has spent the last three-and-a-half years as Lab Director for Compaq's Cambridge Research Laboratory (CRL CRL - Carnegie Representation Language.

), investigating scalable and mobile computing, vision-based human and scene sensing, speech interaction, computer-animated synthetic persona, intelligent information appliances, and the capture, coding, storage, indexing, retrieval, decoding and rendering of multimedia data. During his tenure, CRL developed AltaVista Photo and Media Finder -- applying human-centric computing to the problem of indexing multimedia data, thereby extending the reach of AltaVista beyond the world of text and into the world of audio and video.

Dr. Iannucci joined Digital Equipment Corporation from Exa Corporation, where he was a founder and served as Vice President of Engineering. Before that, he spent 14 years at IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , where he was a Research Staff Member and Manager at the T. J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York Yorktown Heights is an unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in the town of Yorktown in Westchester County, New York. Dr. Iannucci received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT. He also holds an M.S. in Computer Engineering from Syracuse University and a B.E. in Electrical Engineering from Youngstown State University Youngstown State University, at Youngstown, Ohio; coeducational; est. 1908 as a department of the Youngstown Association School sponsored by the Young Men's Christian Association. .
