Compaq Is #1 Vendor In Linux Server Market, Says IDC.

) announced it has been ranked the #1 vendor in the Linux server market based on factory revenue and units shipped for 1999, according to International Data Corp.'s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker for the period of Q1 1999 through Q4 1999. For the year, Compaq led all vendors with 25 percent market share based on unit shipments.

IDC's Quarterly Server Tracker reports that Compaq achieved a total of $213 million in Linux revenue based on 43,304 units shipped in 1999 - with an exceptionally wide lead over second place IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  (10.4 percent revenue market share with $79 million in revenue based on 16,381 units shipped). The Server Tracker also shows Dell in 3rd place with 9.9 percent revenue market share, and Hewlett-Packard in 4th place with 9.4 percent revenue market share. All other vendors (including companies such as Fujitsu, Siemens, SGI (SGI, Sunnyvale, CA, www.sgi.com) A manufacturer of workstations and servers, founded in 1982 by Jim Clark. The company was founded as Silicon Graphics, Inc., but changed to its acronym in 1999. , Unisys and Gateway) posted a total 42 percent market share combined.
