, Compaq now has one of the world's most scalable hubs on the market today. Every port is just what the customer needs, when it is needed," said Alan Lutz, Senior Vice President and Group General Manager, Compaq's Communication Products Group. He added, "All of the new products announced today provide what customers have been demanding, fast, reliable access for LAN-based mission-critical applications."

Migration is Key

As demands for bandwidth-intensive applications increase, Compaq continues in its role of Fast Ethernet leadership by offering new solutions, enabling even easier migration from 10 to 100Mb/s. The Compaq Netelligent 2724 and 2824 Dual-Speed Hubs(a) provide the functionality of a 10Mb/s hub and a 100Mb/s hub, on a per-port basis, in a single, cost-effective unit with "plug-and-play" migration. This allows users to migrate at their own pace, port-by-port, office-by- office, without compromising performance, connectivity, manageability or cost. An internal switch automatically allows customers to run traffic between devices at different speeds.

The Netelligent 2724/2824 Dual-Speed Hubs are the industry's first port-level, auto-sensing dual-speed hubs that are stackable, segmentable and manageable, making them ideal for customers who want to make the transition to Fast Ethernet in some areas of their organization, while at the same time preserve their investment in 10Base-T.

For a price comparable to that of many single-speed hubs, customers can have their choice of Ethernet and Fast Ethernet. Every port on these 24-port hubs auto-negotiates between 10 and 100Mb/s without a trip to the wiring closet The central distribution or servicing point for cables in a network. See MDF and wire center. . These hubs are stackable up to five units high with a managing 2824 model in the stack for a total port count of 120 connections. The 2824 features Compaq's unique Smart Uplink module allowing Fast Ethernet network configuration over longer distances and in cascade configurations similar to Ethernet.

In addition to enlarging ENLARGING. Extending or making more comprehensive; as an enlarging statute, which is one extending the common law.  its line of hubs, Compaq is enhancing its line of switches with two products offering superior price/performance. The Netelligent 5708 Dual-Speed Fast Ethernet Switch(b) and the 5226 Manageable Ethernet Switch(c) provide high-performance departmental and workgroup connectivity at desktop prices, respectively.

"These new products emphasize Compaq's commitment to offering affordable, high-performance migration solutions," said Lutz.

Dual-Speed Ethernet Switch offers High-Performance at Lowest Cost

The Netelligent 5708 Dual-Speed, eight-port, Ethernet Switch offers a feature-rich, high-performance departmental unit at a competitive price. This auto-sensing switch allows customers to change from 10Mb/s or 100Mb/s per port depending on network volume, giving users a seamless solution for migrating from Ethernet to Fast Ethernet. The 5708 can be used to keep a group of "power users" working efficiently, or it can be used in a department to provide Fast Ethernet uplinks from Ethernet hubs or switches. In addition, the 5708 incorporates a crossbar matrix technology which helps ensure that data arrives at its destination without corruption. Auto-adaptive features allow the 5708 switch to change from "store and forward" to "cut through" mode automatically, ensuring peak performance at all times.

Aggressive Price Per Port Ethernet Switch

The Netelligent 5226 Manageable Ethernet Switch has 26 ports and aggressive pricing for use in the workgroup environments. Although the 5226 switch is targeted at workgroup environments, it has several features found in departmental switches. The 5226 provides 6000 MAC addresses, is auto-adaptive, and will change from "store and forward" to "cut through" mode automatically to help ensure peak performance. It can also be used in full or half-duplex operations on each of the 24 10Base-T ports and on the two 100Base-TX ports. The 5226 has some of the largest buffering/port in the industry, allowing low-latency and high-performance. The integrated dual Application Specific Integrated Circuits Integrated circuits

In addition to these new products, Compaq is also announcing North America price reductions on five existing Fast Ethernet Hubs and two existing NICs.

All Netelligent manageable products ship with Compaq Netelligent Management Software(d), which brings network management to new levels of ease-of-use.

Unmanaged Hubs for Small Business Applications

Compaq is also offering a family of Netelligent 10Base-T workgroup hubs designed for small businesses that are ready to build a broader networking base or connect to LANs for the very first time. These affordably priced Ethernet hubs include: the Netelligent 1005 (e), a 5-port model with an uplink; the Netelligent 1009B(f), an 8-port model with an uplink and a fixed BNC (hardware) BNC - A connector for coaxial cable such as that used for some video connections and RG58 "cheapernet" connections. Compaq Netelligent Management Software

Hierarchical map and site views, enhanced network status features, and simple new installation procedures are included in the v2.0 release of Compaq Netelligent Management Software. Compaq Netelligent Management Software is an SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  based management package, which is used to manage all of Compaq's network products. Compaq Netelligent Management Software provides robust performance and fault management and network advanced configuration features. This software makes it simple to connect devices, provides auto-discovery of network devices, and is fully compatible with Compaq Insight Manager. Network managers can access Netelligent products via OpenView, and other industry management packages, by using a third party package from Ordinox Networks Inc.
