On Sept. 3, 1996 DIGEX introduced the world's first managed Web site product line running Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  4.0 on the Intel platform, in a joint development effort with Microsoft Corp. ). To ensure delivery of the industry's highest level of Web site reliability to its corporate customers, DIGEX selected Compaq as the sole hardware platform for the NT 4.0 product line.

The choice was significant for Compaq, as DIGEX is the only Internet carrier in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  which places each of its corporate Web site customers on a dedicated server.

DIGEX maintains the largest dedicated server Web site management facility in the world, with over 600 machines under management at its primary data center in suburban Washington, D.C. Since introducing its NT 4.0 hosted Web server product line in September, 1996, DIGEX has ordered nearly 100 Compaq servers.

"Last year we correctly forecasted that NT 4.0 managed Web server products would be in high demand in 1997. We invested carefully to ensure our ability to offer the best product in the market."

Galleher continued, "That's why we selected Compaq to provide and support our hardware requirements and why we hired Microsoft to assist DIGEX in designing and building our scaleable NT 4.0 product line. Now, more than 40% of our new corporate Web site customers choose one of our Compaq/NT 4.0 products."

The Compaq testimonial advertising program commences tomorrow with an initial insertion in the Wall Street Journal. Subsequent insertions will run in Business Week and Fortune Magazine and also in the following trade publications: CIO CIO: see American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations.
