Compaq Appoints New Vice President and Managing Director to Singapore Manufacturing; Manufacturing Expansion to be Completed by 1996.


SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 30, 1995--In a move reflecting its continued commitment to the Asia/Pacific region, Compaq Computer Corporation (company) Compaq Computer Corporation - The largest US manufacturer and vendor of IBM PC compatible personal computers and servers. Compaq was started in 1982 by three ex-Texas Instruments employees.

) today announced the appointment of K.Y. Wong as Vice President and Managing Director of Compaq Asia Pte Ltd PTE LTD Private Limited , the company's Singapore- based manufacturing operation.

Wong will be responsible for overseeing the expansion of the manufacturing facility -- to be operational in early 1996 -- which will double the size of current facility. The new facility, under construction adjacent to the existing Compaq manufacturing plant, will include the addition of eight new lines to increase production of its portable, desktop and server products as well as printed circuit board assemblies. The expansion will bring the total square footage in Singapore to more than 730,000 square feet.

In addition to managing the expansion, Wong will be responsible for Singapore's manufacturing, design engineering and support activities for the company's operations in Singapore. With more than 17 years experience in the IT industry, Wong has held a number of senior management positions in operations and engineering. Prior to joining Compaq, he was managing director at Advanced Micro Devices, Singapore.

Wong will replace Kirk Moul who has been with Compaq Asia in Singapore since 1989 and Managing Director since 1991. Moul will return to Compaq's corporate headquarters in Houston as vice president, operations alliances, within Corporate Operations. He will be responsible for a number of the company's strategic manufacturing business alliances worldwide.

Compaq Worldwide Manufacturing

Compaq currently has five manufacturing facilities worldwide. In addition to Singapore, Compaq has a 540,000- square-foot factory in Erskine, Scotland which builds the full range of Compaq desktop and server products. In September 1994, Compaq opened a 40,000-square-foot manufacturing operation in Shenzhen, China to produce PCs for China's rapidly growing market. Compaq also opened a factory near Sao Paulo, Brazil in October 1994. Compaq's Houston facility, located at the company's world headquarters, is 610,000 square feet.
