Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ), Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq:SUNW) and Insignia Solutions(R) (Nasdaq:INSG), the leading provider of accelerated Java(TM)software solutions for information appliances, jointly announced today that Compaq is set to ship Java technology, in the form of Insignia's Jeode(TM) PDA Edition, on every unit of Compaq's new iPAQ Pocket PC H3800 handheld computer. The iPAQ Pocket PC H3800 will begin shipping in October with availability in November, according to Compaq.

This development further validates the importance of Java technology as an integral programming language and runtime environment for smart handheld devices. It also, along with several related recent announcements, strongly positions Insignia as a leading Java virtual machine (JVM) technology provider in the PDA and handheld device market. Insignia's Jeode technology has staked this leadership claim by providing a "Sun Authorized Virtual Machine" with complete PersonalJava(TM) platform functionality, accelerated performance, responsive and robust Java application behavior, and plug-in support for running Java applets within the Pocket Internet Explorer browser." Compaq, which has a long-standing relationship with Insignia, began offering Jeode technology for iPAQ Pocket PC users via download on June 4.
