29 Companies Support Advanced Configuration and

Power Interface Specification 2.0

Compaq Computer Corp., Intel Corporation (company) Intel Corporation - A US microelectronics manufacturer. They produced the Intel 4004, Intel 8080, Intel 8086, Intel 80186, Intel 80286, Intel 80386, Intel 486 and Pentium microprocessor families as well as many other integrated circuits and personal computer networking , Microsoft Corp., Phoenix Technologies and Toshiba Corp. today announced the publication of the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface See ACPI.

(hardware, standard) Advanced Configuration and Power Interface - (ACPI) An open industry standard developed by Intel, Microsoft, and Toshiba for configuration and power management.
(ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) A power management specification developed by Intel, Toshiba and Microsoft that makes hardware status information available to the operating system. ) version 2.0 specification. Going beyond the original December 1996 ACPI Version 1.0 release, ACPI version 2.0. delivers increased flexible power management to a broad array of computers, including corporate and enterprise servers, desktops and notebook PCs.

ACPI allows system manufacturers to deliver operating systems-directed power management capabilities. The original ACPI 1.0 specification is an open industry specification to enable easy implementation of motherboard device configuration and power management on notebook, desktop and server PCs.

ACPI 2.0 adds the support for 64-bit processor addressing to extend the benefits of ACPI to Intel's IA-64 server architecture. The ACPI 2.0 specification also adds the concept of multiple processors and device performance states to enable longer battery life and lower operating temperatures on the platform, such as those currently supported by Intel's mobile Pentium See Pentium M. (R) III processor featuring Intel(R) SpeedStep(TM) technology.

Enhancements targeted at the server market include support for hot-pluggable CPUs, memory, and PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

(2) (Peripheral Component Interconnect) The most widely used I/O bus (peripheral bus).
, PCI-X (PCI eXtended) An enhanced PCI bus technology originally developed by IBM, HP and Compaq that is backward compatible with existing PCI cards. PCI and 32-bit PCI-X slots are physically the same, and PCI cards can plug into PCI-X slots.  devices. The ACPI 2.0 was designed so that the ACPI 1.0 compliant portions of silicon would be compatible with ACPI 2.0. The complete ACPI version 2.0 specification is now available and can be downloaded from the ACPI Web site at http://www.teleport.com/~acpi/.
