Company profile: PotashCorp.ALTHOUGH IT HAS HIT NO. 1 (FIRST IN 2001 and again in '05), PotashCorp occupies spot No. 3 in the 2007 version of the Top 100. And though they face stiff competition for top spot--primarily from IPSCO and Federated Connected and treated as one. See federated database and federated directories. Co-operatives, the latter of which set a new Top 100 standard of nearly $5.4 billion--the smart money may well be on PotashCorp returning to No. 1 in the not-too-distant future. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Coming off yet another record quarter (for the third consecutive quarter) in Q2 of '07, and having experienced its three best years in '04, '05, and '06, PotashCorp has its sights set on bigger and better things down the road. For example, the company is further increasing its capacity by investing approximately $3.4 billion in new potash potash: see potassium carbonate. potash Name used for various inorganic compounds of potassium, chiefly the carbonate (K2CO3), a white crystalline material formerly obtained from wood ashes. projects which will be completed between 2007 and 2011. This investment is aimed at helping meet the anticipated growth in demand for fertilizer from around the world. PotashCorp currently holds 75 per cent of the world's excess potash capacity, which means the company is "going to grow faster than any other player in our business," says PotashCorp president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. William J. Doyle. While a new $1.7-billion mine and expanded milling facilities at Sussex, NB represent the company's biggest construction project, most of PotashCorp's investment is occurring right here in Saskatchewan. Much of the corporation's growth is due to rising incomes in China, India and other fast-developing nations throughout southeast Asia Southeast Asia, region of Asia (1990 est. pop. 442,500,000), c.1,740,000 sq mi (4,506,600 sq km), bounded roughly by the Indian subcontinent on the west, China on the north, and the Pacific Ocean on the east. . This new prosperity is improving diets, bringing an increased demand for more nutritious, high-protein foods such as beef, pork and chicken. Raising these animals requires large amounts of feed grain. Grain growers, meanwhile, need fertilizer to replenish re·plen·ish v. re·plen·ished, re·plen·ish·ing, re·plen·ish·es v.tr. 1. [Latin d in crop production and to gain maximum yields from their land. Furthermore, PotashCorp's growth translates into growth for Saskatchewan. The more than $2 billion investment in the company's Saskatchewan facilities means hundreds of construction jobs, and many permanent ones, once construction is completed. Moreover, construction projects undertaken in Saskatchewan mean PotashCorp will be procuring more goods and services In economics, economic output is divided into physical goods and intangible services. Consumption of goods and services is assumed to produce utility (unless the "good" is a "bad"). It is often used when referring to a Goods and Services Tax. . Last year, PotashCorp facilities spent an average 62 per cent of their procurement budgets locally. Support such as this generates growth of local businesses, which results in even more job creation in Saskatchewan. PotashCorp takes pride in sponsoring worthwhile causes in the communities in which it does business. In 2006, the corporation pledged more than $3 million to various events and projects, most in Saskatchewan. This helping hand is extended to projects ranging from assisting Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity, nonprofit ecumenical Christian organization that enables low-income people to own affordable, livable housing. Headquartered in Americus, Ga., it was founded in 1976 by businessman Millard Fuller and his wife. in constructing housing for low-income families to sponsorship of Griffith Stadium in PotashCorp Park. PotashCorp believes these efforts are highly important. "We do more than enrich the land; we enrich lives," Doyle says. "While helping farmers meet the demands of a growing population remains at the heart of our business, we also set goals and targets that reflect our expanded role in protecting the environment, supporting healthy communities and operating a business that provides value to investors, customers, employees, suppliers and our neighbours."--KM |
