The West Los Angeles-based group has won an $844,000 contract from the National Institutes of Health to manage a commercialization assistance program for recipients of NIH "Not invented here." See digispeak.

The grants, which range from $750,000 to more than $2 million, are given to companies on the cusp of developing a commercially viable product.

About 450 companies receive the grants each year, and Larta will select up to 125 of them for further assistance with such issues as regulatory hurdles, licensing strategy, strategic alliances and mergers and acquisitions. "It's it's

The institute, which has 10 employees, plans to add two or three more people to manage the program, but will provide most of the services through a network of attorneys and other professionals it has developed.

The NIH has an option to extend Larta's contract to three years for a total of $2.5 million.
