Some U.S. carriers oppose Virgin America's application. Several U.S. airlines believe start-up Virgin America Virgin America is a U.S. based low-cost airline that began service on 8 August 2007. The airline's stated aim is to provide low-fare, high-quality service for "long-haul point-to-point service between major metropolitan cities on the Eastern and West Coast seaboards".  should not be allowed to operate domestic flights in the U.S. because it is owned and funded by foreign investors. A spokesman for Virgin America says its application to operate U.S. flights is within the law. The airline submitted its application to the Department of Transportation in December. Sep 25, 2006
