United seeks approval to add Wi-Fi hardware to fleet. United Airlines plans to eventually install hardware for inflight wireless broadband High-speed wireless transmission of data. What is "high" speed is always a changing number. Wireless systems are typically slower than land-based, wireline networks. In the past, wireless broadband started at 250 Kbps, whereas land-based broadband was generally considered to start at T1  on its entire fleet. The airline is seeking Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), component of the U.S. Department of Transportation that sets standards for the air-worthiness of all civilian aircraft, inspects and licenses them, and regulates civilian and military air traffic through its air traffic control  approval to add the Wi-Fi equipment. United Airlines Traffic Rises 2.3 Percent in June. United Airlines said Wednesday June traffic rose as the airline increased the number of seats available and filled a higher percentage of them. United said revenue passenger miles Revenue passenger miles (RPMs) is a measure of a passenger traffic for an airline flight, bus, or train calculated by multiplying the total number of revenue-paying passengers aboard the vehicle by the distance traveled measured in miles.  rose 2.3 percent last month to 10.76 billion from 10.51 billion in the year-ago month. A revenue passenger mile represent one paying passenger flown one mile. The airline's capacity, or available seat miles Available seat miles (ASM) is a measure of an airline flight's passenger carrying capacity. It is equal to the number of seats available multiplied by the number of miles flown. This measures an airlines capacity for transporting passengers. , grew 2.2 percent to 12.18 billion from 11.92 billion last year. United's load factor, or the percentage of available seats filled, expanded to 88.3 percent from 88.1 percent. For the year to date, revenue passenger miles are up 4.2 percent to 58.15 billion, capacity has increased 2.3 percent and load factor expanded to 82.4 percent from 80.8 percent. Jul 5, 2006
