Company Watch - Northwest Airlines.

Aug 6, 2007

Northwest Airlines and its pilots made a deal Wednesday that would ease pilots' workloads in an effort to stop the end-of-the-month cancellations that have plagued the airline. Northwest was forced to cancel hundreds of flights at the ends of June and July because it couldn't find enough pilots. The airline had said more pilots than usual weren't showing up for work; pilots said they were overworked under a new, tougher schedule implemented under bankruptcy bankruptcy, in law, settlement of the liabilities of a person or organization wholly or partially unable to meet financial obligations. The purposes are to distribute, through a court-appointed receiver, the bankrupt's assets equitably among creditors and, in most . Aug 2, 2007

Northwest Airlines will hire hundreds of pilots and reduce its flight schedule in a bid to avoid the end-of-the-month troubles that it endured in June and July, the company said. Northwest Airlines reported a second-quarter profit that was inflated by reorganization items, reversing a year-ago loss. Northwest, which completed a bankruptcy reorganization in May, said on Tuesday profit was USD$2.15 billion, compared with a loss of USD$285 million a year earlier. Excluding items related to its reorganization, Northwest said it earned USD$273 million in the quarter, compared with a profit of USD$179 million in the year-ago period. Aug 1, 2007

Northwest suffered the extraordinarily high cancellation rates at the end of the last two months, blaming the problem on "pilot absenteeism." The airline has not given a reason for the absences. The Air Line Pilots Association, however, said absenteeism is not the problem. Rather, it said, the cancellations result from the airline having too few pilots to work the busy summer flying schedule. Aug 1, 2007

A surge in Northwest Airlines cancellations recently comes at a particularly bad time for the airline, which is trying to build momentum for its recovery after a 20 month bankruptcy reorganization that ended in May. Northwest suffered a similar surge in cancellations in late June. In a note to employees on Friday, Chief Executive Doug Steenland said the carrier is cutting its August flight schedule, recalling furloughed pilots and planning to hire more pilots. Northwest is set to report is second-quarter earnings on Tuesday. Jul 31, 2007

Although Northwest's finances improved out of bankruptcy, it has been plagued by operating problems. It has had to cancel hundreds of flights at the end of June and July because it couldn't provide enough pilots for its planes. The airline said those problems cost it $25 million during the second quarter. The airline might consider only carrying cargo, where it makes profits, and give up on passenger flights since it does not have a clue how to serve the traveling public. Jul 31, 2007

Northwest's Flight Cancellation Rate Soars. Northwest Airlines canceled an unusually high number of flights over the weekend, blaming a spike in pilot absenteeism for the disruption disruption /dis·rup·tion/ (dis-rup´shun) a morphologic defect resulting from the extrinsic breakdown of, or interference with, a developmental process. . Northwest said it could not give a reason for the high rate of absenteeism, but the union representing the pilots has linked it to inadequate staffing during the peak summer travel season. A Northwest spokesman said the carrier completed about 92 percent of its scheduled flights on Friday and Saturday compared with about 99 percent which is more typical for the airline. Jul 31, 2007

Northwest Airlines' pattern of cancellations continued Sunday, with more than 200 flights dropped as pilots who were pushed to the limit of hours they are allowed to fly each month stayed home from work. The airline blamed the pilots, who in turn blamed the airline for failing to address staff shortfalls after it canceled more than 2,000 flights in June, many of them toward the end of the month. Passengers suffered again Sunday, especially at Detroit Metro Airport. Jul 30, 2007
