Delta and US Airways are also planning to spruce up their food offerings with healthier, tastier items. May 8, 2007 American Airlines plans to maintain a low-to-negative growth strategy for the foreseeable future even as it accelerates deliveries of Boeing 737-800s to replace its MD-80 fleet. American said that 737-800 deliveries will continue to be "pulled forward" but that replacing the MD-80 fleet, which numbers more than 270, likely will take nine years beginning in 2009. American will lower capacity by 3% year-over-year in the second quarter and by 2% for the full year as it remains "focused on balance sheet repair." May 10, 2007 Austrian Airlines will become the first European operator of 767-300ER blended winglets after announcing an order for six retrofits yesterday, Aviation Partners Boeing said. CEO Alfred Oetsch said the carrier will save 1,000 tons of fuel per year per aircraft while extending range by approximately 670 km. after installation, which will begin in spring 2009. May 9, 2007 Boeing Deal Off As Flyington Buys Airbus India's Flyington Freighters said on Wednesday it would not go ahead with an order of freight planes from Boeing after it signed a previously announced USD$1 billion order for six A330-200F cargo aircraft from rival Airbus. May 9, 2007 Boeing recorded another strong week last week with orders for 51 more 737s. Two were for Boeing Business Jets and 49 were unidentified. During the week, previously unidentified 737s were announced by Copa Airlines . The new orders take this year's tally to 315 net of cancellations, of which 130 are unidentified: 56 737s, six 747s, three 767s, 21 777s and 44 787s. May 7, 2007 No Chance Of Survivors From Kenya Airways Aircraft. A Kenya Airways plane that crashed after takeoff in Cameroon with 114 people on board is largely submerged in a swamp and there is no chance of survivors, Cameroon's civil protection service said on Monday. The Boeing 737-800 vanished early on Saturday shortly after leaving Douala for Nairobi in torrential rain. The aircraft was found late on Sunday not far from Douala Airport after nearly two days of fruitless searches in the south of the country. May 7, 2007 Iberia Maintenance signed a five-year deal with Cygnus Air to maintain and repair the freight operator's Boeing 757. May 11, 2007 India's Flyington Freighters said on Wednesday it would not go ahead with an order of freight planes from Boeing after it signed a previously announced USD$1 billion order for six A330-200F cargo aircraft from rival Airbus. Flyington Freighters will pay USD$175 million for each Airbus plane, said Kiran Rao, executive vice-president for marketing and contracts, customer affairs at Airbus. May 9, 2007 International Federation of Air Line Pilots Assns. said it was "outraged" to learn Brazil's Policia Federal recommended prosecution of Joseph Lepore and Jan Paladino, the pilots of the Embraer Legacy that collided with a Gol 737-800 last September. Charges would be brought under section 261 of the Brazilian Penal Code "for placing a vessel or aircraft in jeopardy," according to IFALPA. It called the action "flawed on a number of levels," noting among other things that the exclusion of the military-run air traffic control system from the investigation "is a staggering oversight." It called on the Brazilian Ministry of Justice "to take the opportunity to comply with the guidance of ICAO Annex 13 concerning post-accident prosecution and to correct the premature action of the Pol?cia Federal by waiting until the findings of the technical investigation are reported by CINTRA." May 11, 2007 Goodrich was selected by China Southern Airlines to supply wheels and electronically actuated brakes for 10 Boeing 787s on order. May 7, 2007 Jet Airways has ordered three more Boeing 777-300ERs. No delivery details were given. Jet is taking delivery of the 10 777-300ERs ordered in 2005 through the end of next year. Ten A330-300s also will join the fleet during the same period. May 11, 2007 Kenya Airways said yesterday that the flight data recorder from the Boeing 737-800 that crashed after takeoff from Douala on Saturday, killing all 115 on board, was recovered "and appears to be in good condition," adding that "the recovery is still going on under very difficult circumstances" and that the airline is flying victims' relatives to Cameroon while working to "put measures in place to minimize disruptions on our flight schedules." May 9, 2007 Saudi Arabian Airlines is looking to buy up to 60 new aircraft, the Arab Air Carriers Organization confirmed yesterday, and intends to establish a low-cost subsidiary. SAA also announced a service expansion including an increase in flights to Dubai to 44 weekly from 30 and added frequencies to London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Madrid, Frankfurt, New York JFK and Washington Dulles and new seasonal services to Vienna, Athens and Munich.
