Boeing said design enhancements that increase the short-field performance of the 737NG earned US FAA certification this week after a four-month test program. The improvements allow carriers to fly increased payload at airports with runways shorter than 5,000 ft. and include a two-position tail skid that reduces approach speeds, sealed leading-edge slats for lift and increased spoiler spoiler: see airplane.

Boeing reports big second-quarter loss on one-time charges. Boeing reported a second-quarter net loss of $160 million, a significant decline from net income of $532 million a year ago owing to more than $1 billion in one-time charges related to delays in its Airborne Early Warning The detection of enemy air or surface units by radar or other equipment carried in an airborne vehicle, and the transmitting of a warning to friendly units. Boeing reaffirmed its bullish air cargo forecast this week, projecting that the world freighter fleet will nearly double from 1,789 to 3,563 by 2025. FedEx plane goes off Louisville runway. A FedEx Corp. cargo plane veered off a Louisville (Ky.) International Airport runway today after the pilot aborted the takeoff. No one was hurt, and no damage occurred. An FAA official says it is unclear why the Boeing 727, bound for Memphis, Tenn., went off the runway. Jul 27, 2006

Singapore Airlines has ordered Boeing planes worth USD$4.5 billion, and then followed up with a surprise USD$7.5 billion order for Airbus earlier this month. The airline learnt last month that deliveries of the new Airbus A380 superjumbo, which Singapore Air hopes to fly at the end of this year, will be at least six months late. Jul 28, 2006
