American Airlines plans to maintain a low-to-negative growth strategy for the foreseeable future even as it accelerates deliveries of Boeing 737-800s to replace its MD-80 fleet. American said that 737-800 deliveries will continue to be "pulled forward" but that replacing the MD-80 fleet, which numbers more than 270, likely will take nine years beginning in 2009.
