Company Profile for Oak Ridge Micro-Energy Inc.

Business Editors

--(BUSINESS WIRE)

Oak Ridge Oak Ridge, city (1990 pop. 27,310), Anderson and Roane counties, E Tenn., on Black Oak Ridge and the Clinch River; founded by the U.S. government 1942, inc. as an independent city 1959.  Micro-Energy Inc. is on a mission to commercialize a new, thin-film lithium battery Lithium batteries are primary batteries that have lithium metal or lithium compounds as an anode. Depending on the design and chemical compounds used lithium cells can produce voltages from 1.5V to about 3V, twice the voltage of an ordinary zinc-carbon battery or alkaline cell.  technology, which could revolutionize the way we live.

The thin-film battery is lithium-based and is manufactured to be thinner than common plastic wrap. Like the larger, traditional lithium batteries that power laptops and cell phones, this lithium battery is also rechargeable. Unlike traditional lithium batteries, the thin-film battery is intended for small, high-tech applications, many of which have yet to be invented.

Current anticipated uses include "smart" credit cards, wireless sensors, radio frequency identification See RFID.  tags, chip memory backup, and advanced drug delivery devices. Future applications will grow as the availability of thin-film batteries increase.

With "smart" credit cards, a thin-film lithium battery embedded in the card's plastic provides unprecedented levels of consumer protection. Thin-film lithium batteries will eventually power wireless sensors, smaller than the size of a dime, that can detect biological or chemical contaminants, movement and pressure, then transmitting this information to a local receiver. Airline baggage tags with the thin-film batteries embedded inside the adhesive paper along with a transmitter could identify the location of a passenger's baggage, thus enhancing travel security. The possible applications of thin-film batteries are innumerable.

The technology has evolved over the past decade at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a multiprogram science and technology national laboratory managed for the United States Department of Energy by UT-Battelle, LLC. ORNL is located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, near Knoxville.  (ORNL ORNL Oak Ridge National Laboratory ), a government laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The battery is a solid-state device solid-state device

Electronic device that operates on the basis of the electric, magnetic, or optical properties of a solid material, especially one that uses a solid crystal in which an orderly three-dimensional arrangement of atoms, ions, or molecules is repeated
. The manufacturing process is similar to applying a thin, optical coating An optical coating is a process of placing thin layer of material on an optical component such as a lens or mirror which alters the way in which the optic reflects and transmits light.  onto a compact disc. The various layers are applied to a variety of flexible and rigid substrates.

The features and advantages of the lithium thin-film battery are:

-- Extremely thin profile

-- All solid-state construction (no liquid electrolyte)

-- Unaffected by G-forces or hydrostatic pressure hydrostatic pressure

The pressure exerted by a fluid at equilibrium at a given point within the fluid, due to the force of gravity. Hydrostatic pressure increases in proportion to depth measured from the surface because of the increasing weight of fluid

 and ballistic applications)

-- Can be recharged thousands of times with negligible loss of

capacity

-- Easily recharged by solar cells, fuel cells, cell phone

chargers and other common devices

-- Can be operated at high and low temperatures (tests have been

conducted between -20 (degree) C and 100 (degree) C

-- Can be made in any shape or size, and is flexible when

fabricated on flexible substrates

The company operates offices in Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Salt Lake City.
