Company Profile for Illumina, Inc.Business Editors --(BUSINESS WIRE) Illumina is developing tools for the large-scale analysis of genetic variation and function. Understanding genetic variation and function is critical to the development of personalized medicine, a key goal of genomics and proteomics. Our tools will provide information that could be used to improve drugs and therapies, customize diagnoses and treatment, and cure disease. With completion of the human genome sequencing project, demand is increasing for tools that can assist researchers in conducting the billions of tests necessary to convert raw genetic data into medically valuable information. This requires functional analysis of highly complex biological systems, involving a scale of experimentation not practical with currently available tools and technologies. Illumina is developing a comprehensive line of products that can address the scale of experimentation and the breadth of functional analysis required to achieve the goals of molecular medicine. Platform offerings and technology will support SNP genotyping, RNA profiling and proteomics. Our patented BeadArray(TM) technology uses fiber optics to achieve a level of array miniaturization that allows for a new scale of experimentation and enables creation of next-generation arrays with a unique combination of high throughput, cost effectiveness and flexibility. In addition, our complementary, Oligator(R) oligonucleotide synthesis technology produces critical raw materials for our array products and genetic analysis services business while providing significant excess capacity for oligo sales to large genomics research centers. Our first product implementation is a turnkey solution for production-scale analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) - small genetic variations responsible for individual differences such as hair color, predisposition to disease, and response to drugs. The BeadLab system offering, now being used by HapMap Project participants to map over 50% of the common haplotypes 1. The set of alleles that determine different antigens but are closely linked on one chromosome and inherited as a unit, providing a distinctive genetic pattern used in histocompatibility testing. 2. The antigenic phenotype determined by closely linked genes inherited as a unit from one parent.
