Test Methods--Useful Methods

This volume is the final publication of Useful Methods, which were comprehensively reviewed by technical experts in 1991. These procedures were intended to help members measure certain properties of the products and materials they manufacture using simple laboratory procedures, even if not as precise and accurate as the Official or Provisional Methods. They have not been reviewed or sanctioned by TAPPI technical groups, as have the Official and Provisional Methods.

Dirt Estimation Charts

TAPPI's Dirt Charts are manufactured from an original negative produced on DuPont CRR film. A rapid-access processor using Fuji QR-D1 chemistry is used to process the cards. Each card is produced on Kodak photographic paper, using a Douthitt contacting frame with an Olite light source and Olite light integrator, which controls the exposure. The cards are exposed to 20 units of light. Each piece is measured by looking at the 2.0 dot with a 100-power magnifier that has a reticle (scale), incremented in 5/10,000's of a millimeter, on the lens. The dots on the chart are correct within an average 10% or 0.005 square millimeters, whichever is the larger. This opaque dirt chart is to be used with TAPPI Test Methods T 213, T 437, and T 537. Size Estimation Charts Transparency

Developed from and based on the TAPPI Dirt Estimation Chart, this transparency is used to measure the size of spots, defects, or inclusions over the range of 0.02 to 5 [mm.sup.2] in paper and other industrial materials such as textiles or plastics. Instructions for use of this transparency are outlined in TAPPI Test Method T 564. The chart can be used in a large number of applications where there is a need to estimate a size (area) by way of a direct comparison to a known area. Applications may include, but are not limited to, the measurement of visible ink spatter on printed surfaces, the estimation of the growth rate of bio-colonies, air inclusions in transparent plastic castings and films, etc. The chart must not be used to estimate the equivalent black area (EBA) of dirt or other colored specks (use the TAPPI Dirt Estimation Chart for this purpose or use image analysis).

TAPPI Calibration Plates to be used with Test Method T 563

Improve your image analysis testing capabilities with the Calibration Plates for use with TAPPI T 563 "Equivalent Black Area (EBA) and Count of Visible Dirt in Pulp, Paper, and Paperboard by Image Analysis." Use of image analysis equipment provides a more accurate dirt count than the visual method using the TAPPI Dirt Chart. TAPPI Calibration Plates can be used with either camera-based or scanner-based instruments. A set of calibration plates contains four separate plates in a 5 X 6-inch black vinyl pouch. These plates meet the specifications described in T 563.

TAPPI Calibration Plates are inspected and measured at the PAPRICAN laboratory. The sizes of the dots are precise and within specifications; however, the grayness of the 16 dots may be lighter than the grayness of the square at the edge of the plates. If the reflectance value of the square is used for the dots, then this may result in an over-estimation of the equivalent black area (EBA) ppm. Correction factors for dealing with the print density variance are included with each set. A copy of Test Method T 563 is also included.
