CompUSA Inc. FISCAL 1993 SECOND QUARTER SALES UP 64 PERCENT

DALLAS, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- CompUSA Inc. (NYSE: CPU), America's largest computer superstore retailer, today announced that sales for the second quarter ended Dec. 26, 1992, increased 64.2 percent to $324.5 million from $197.6 million for the comparable period ended Dec. 28, 1991.
Comparable-store sales were up 16.3 percent for the fiscal 1993 second quarter for the 20 stores open for a year or more.
For the first six months of fiscal 1993, net sales were up 60.3 percent to $587.9 million from $366.8 million for the first six months of fiscal 1992. Comparable-store sales for the six months of fiscal 1993 were up 18.5 percent from the first half of fiscal 1992.
"CompUSA enjoyed outstanding sales growth during the quarter, including a very strong Christmas selling season," said Nathan Morton, president and chief executive officer. "We have positioned our stores to take advantage of the surging demand for personal computers and related merchandise. Customers are seeking out our stores as their destination of choice for a broad assortment of computer products at highly competitive prices.
"We believe our comparable-store sales results during Fiscal 1992 second quarter to be among the highest in the country for major retailers," Morton added. The percentage increases in comparable-store sales for each of the following fiscal 1993 periods were:
 5 weeks 4 weeks 4 weeks 13 weeks 26 weeks
 Oct.92 Nov.92 Dec.92 2QFY93 6Mo.FY93
Total Comp Stores 21.2 11.8 15.4 16.3 18.5
Beginning in the first quarter of fiscal 1993, CompUSA changed its financial reporting to fiscal periods to provide more comparable results on a year-to-year basis, and all reported sales results and comparisons for the second quarter and six months of both fiscal years reflect that change. Fiscal years now end on the last Saturday of each June, and each 13-week quarter is now divided into an initial five-week and two four-week periods.
CompUSA currently operates 38 high-volume computer superstores in 26 major metropolitan areas throughout the U.S. The superstores offer more than 5,000 microcomputer hardware, software and related products at deep-discount prices to retail, business, governmental and institutional customers. The superstores also include full- service maintenance operations and classroom training facilities.
