CompTIA, the Computing Technology Industry Association, representing the ICT industry worldwide, presents policy recommendations, to the European Commission's Skills and Mobility Task Force. The Barcelona Declaration: Bridging the ICT Skills Gap in the EU was adopted at a major ICT training conference, "Strategies for Success" in Barcelona. The declaration summarises seven guiding principles designed to address the ICT skills shortage and thus promote European competitiveness. `The number of ICT jobs in the EU will grow to about 13 million in 2003. This will result in billions of curd lost income across the European market," said John Venator, President and CEO of CompTIA. `CompTIA, which is working closely together with the European ICT training industry, believes that the EU institutions must support the development of new and existing education, increase ICT training and encourage life-long learning in order to tackle the difficult situation of the EU ICT industry," he continued.

The seven principles include key recommendations on how to address the ICT skills gap with an integrated approach that would map technical and managerial skills, development of job descriptions and career path planning.
