CompTIA RFID+(TM) Certification Helps Companies Prepare RFID Workforce; Beta Exam Available This Month.

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. -- With deployment of radio frequency identification See RFID.  (RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) A data collection technology that uses electronic tags for storing data. The tag, also known as an "electronic label," "transponder" or "code plate," is made up of an RFID chip attached to an antenna. ) technology a matter of when, not if for many organizations, a new professional certification Professional certification, trade certification, or professional designation, often called simply certification or qualification, is a designation earned by a person to assure that he/she is qualified to perform a job or task.  from the Computing Technology Industry Association See CompTIA.  (CompTIA) is helping companies to develop workers skilled in the challenging technology.

The beta exam version of CompTIA RFID+(TM) certification, a vendor-neutral professional credential to validate knowledge and skill in working with RFID, is available through December 31, 2005. The beta exam (RF1-001) is intended for individuals with a foundational knowledge of the technology and between six and twenty-four months of experience in the RFID industry. Individuals who pass the beta exam will be certified as a CompTIA RFID+ professional.

"RFID is a complex and still evolving technology, and expertise is absolutely required for its usage to be successful," said David Sommer Sommer is a surname, from the German and Danish word for the season "summer".

, vice president, electronic commerce, CompTIA. "While the fundamentals remain the same, each deployment is unique because of differences in products, processes and physical environment. All of these factors can be overcome, but it takes knowledge and experience. CompTIA RFID+ certification provides the foundation-level credentials and skills that will prepare RFID professionals to overcome these obstacles to successful deployment."

A 2005 study commissioned by CompTIA and conducted by Frost & Sullivan, a global leader in strategic growth consulting, found that just over one-half of more than 500 organizations surveyed in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  had either completed RFID implementations or planned to do so within the next 12 months. This included companies that are evaluating, pilot testing, implementing, or currently using RFID.

While compliance with customer mandates continues to be a key market driver for implementation, organizations are increasingly exploring options for making better use of all that RFID has to offer. The CompTIA/Frost & Sullivan study found that the leading benefits companies hope to attain through RFID implementation are increased accuracy in data, improved delivery reliability, reduced waste and defects, and more supply chain visibility.

The CompTIA RFID+ beta exam covers topics related to the installation, configuration and maintenance of RFID hardware and device software, including interrogation interrogation

zone basics, testing and troubleshooting, standards and regulations, tag knowledge, design selection, installation, site analysis, RF physics, and RFID peripherals. Complete beta exam objectives are available at: http://www.comptia.org/certification/rfid/objectives.aspx.

Candidates who take the beta exam are helping the RFID industry to establish the appropriate requirements for the certification. Candidates who pass the beta exam will be among the first in the industry to be certified as a CompTIA RFID+ professional and will not need to take the permanent CompTIA RFID+ certification exam, scheduled for availability in the first quarter of 2006.

There is a $75 fee for the beta exam to cover delivery and publication costs. The fee is a 66-percent discount off the regular non-member exam price of $225 for CompTIA RFID+ certification. Registration for the CompTIA RFID+ beta exam is available through Thomson Prometric and Pearson VUE at www.comptia.org/registerforexam.
