Commuters face further disruption to journeys; WEATHER CHAOS.


COMMUTERS will face further disruption to services after flooding caused the worst ever damage to the Metro system.

A Nexus spokesman said: "Metro suffered some of the worst flooding in its history at the weekend.

"The water has played havoc with our equipment and the damage is such that we have had to suspend all Metro services between Kingston Park and the airport until further notice.

"We are currently pumping away the excess water and only then will we be able to assess the extent of the damage and carry out the necessary repairs. We apologise for the disruption."

The flooding on Saturday evening saw the platforms at Newcastle Airport Metro station completely submerged. The level crossing at the nearby Callerton Parkway station was also deluged.

The Metro lines were also flooded between Shiremoor and Northumberland Park Metro stations on Saturday afternoon.

The tracks were submerged and the flooding was the worst ever seen on this part of the network. Nexus was, however, able to pump away the excess and restore services on Sunday morning.
