Commute Alternatives Available On-line in Time for Rideshare Week.


SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 5, 1998--A free map filled with transit information and solo driving alternatives is available in time for California Rideshare Week (Oct. 5-9).

 and RIDES for Bay Area Commuters have teamed up to produce this handy tool for daily commuters and excursion travelers trying to navigate the maze of Bay Area transit routes. The free AAA Commute Alternatives Map is available at all AAA offices in the Bay Area, and is available on line at: www.aaa.com.

"Bay Area commuters have many options to solo driving as there are more ferries, trains, commuter buses and ride-sharing programs available now than ever," said AAA spokesman Paul Moreno. The AAA Commute Alternatives Map is the only free, comprehensive overview of Bay Area transit systems. It includes phone numbers and Web site addresses of transit agencies, as well as information on carpooling, vanpooling and commuting by bicycle. Details on getting to airports by public transit are also included.

The map features the forthcoming Altamont Commuter Express The Altamont Commuter Express (also known as ACE, pronounced "ace") is a regional rail service in California connecting Stockton with San Jose. It is named for the Altamont Pass, through which it travels.  (ACE) train running between Stockton and San Jose, as well as the proposed ferry between Richmond and San Francisco. The map identifies all stations on BART, Caltrain, Amtrak Amtrak, the National Railroad Passenger Corp., authorized to operate virtually all intercity passenger railroad routes in the United States. Amtrak was created by Congress in 1970 in response to more than two decades of continuous operating deficits by privately run , the Altamont Commuter Express train, and the Santa Clara VTA Light Rail.

AAA's partners in this event are sister stations KCBS radio and KPIX television. KCBS (740 AM) features traffic updates every 10 minutes. KPIX's Web site (www.kpix.com) and KCBS's Web site (www.kcbs.com) also have continual traffic updates.

The other map partner, RIDES For Bay Area Commuters, provides free commute assistance, including personalized carpool matching, help with joining or starting a vanpool van·pool
