Approximately $275 million in funding is available to local and state law enforcement agencies A law enforcement agency (LEA) is a term used to describe any agency which enforces the law. The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) is an agency within the United States Department of Justice.
 (COPS).

The COPS Universal Hiring Program will provide about $119 million in grants to hire additional law enforcement officers. The deadline for applications is June 21, 2002.

Grants totaling $121 million are available to hire school resource officers under the COPS In Schools Program. June 14, 2002 is the deadline for applications.
