Community mourns for SmithBucklin co-founder.


William E. Smith William E. Smith (June 18, 1824 – February 13, 1883) was the 14th Governor of Wisconsin.

Born in Kincardineshire, Scotland, and moved to the United States with his family as a child.
, co-founder and chairman emeritus of SmithBucklin Corporation, died on July 24 at the age of 90. Smith co-founded Smith Bucklin & Associates, Inc., now known as SmithBucklin Corporation, in 1949. And under his guidance, the firm grew steadily, opening offices in three cities around the country. "The association management profession lost one of its true champions with the passing of William E. Smith," says ASAE President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  John H. Graham John Hugh Graham (April 1, 1835 - July 11, 1895) was a U.S. Representative from New York.

Born in Belfast, Ireland, GrahamImmigrated in 1836 to the United States with his parents, who settled in Brooklyn, New York. He attended the public schools of Brooklyn.

During his years in the industry, Smith received numerous accolades, including the Association Trends Association Executive of the Year, ASAE Foundation Man of the Year, and ASAE Lifetime Achievement awards. Smith, who was executive director of the Popcorn Institute--SmithBucklin's first client--until the time of his death, was also inducted into the Popcorn Institute Hall of Fame. And he posthumously received the 2004 International Association of Association Management Companies Lifetime Achievement Award last month.

Smith served five years as chairman of the Chicago Tourism Council, working in close cooperation with three different mayors, and was a lifetime member of the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau's board. In addition, he co-founded the Central Michigan Avenue Business Association and was a member of the Council for the Biological Sciences Division, Pritzker School of Medicine The Pritzker School of Medicine is the M.D. granting unit of the Biological Sciences Division of the University of Chicago. It is located on the University's main campus in the Hyde Park portion of Chicago proper, and matriculated its first class in 1927. , University of Chicago, as well as a supporter of the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

An active conservationist, Smith was a member of the Sierra Club and the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy The Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy (SWMLC) is a nonprofit tax-exempt organization for the preservation of natural, scenic, and historic landscapes in Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Calhoun, Cass, St. Joseph, and Branch counties in Southwest Michigan.  and was a charter member/founder of the Lake Michigan Shore Association.
