"I missed my buddy," she told the Fallon, Nevada, Lahontan Valley News.

The Capps' ordeal was made much easier by the generosity of others, however. Both Harley and Kerry received sick-leave time donated by their co-workers. Harley turned in the application two days before the deadline, and not long afterwards received a phone call from instructor Louie Mori, telling him the application was approved. The class remodeled the Capps' home to make it wheelchair accessible.

Mori's high-school class provided the labor for the Capps' home renovation project, and the townspeople responded generously to Mori's requests for donations of materials or time. The Capps received donations from local hardware stores, building contractors, and individuals.

The Capps are moved by the generosity the community has shown to their family. "The outpouring of human kindness just renewed our spirit," Kerry's mother-in-law told reporters.
