Community clears Virginia trail.


Volunteer groups in Charlottesville, Va., came together on National Trails Day to clear the forested side of McIntire Park for several miles of trails.

The coordinated effort involved rescuing native plants, clearing miles of trails, creating stream crossings and cleaning half a mile of a stream.

The groups involved were the Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Department, Blue Ridge Blue Ridge, eastern range of the Appalachian Mts., extending south from S Pa. to N Ga.; highest mountains in the E United States. Mt. Mitchell, 6,684 ft (2,037 m) high, is the tallest peak.   • Ragged Mountain (New Hampshire), a mountain in New Hampshire

Organizers say the effort took six months to pull together.
