Community Support Needed to Secure One-Million Dollar AmeriCorps Grant to Prepare LAUSD Students With Necessary Literacy and Math Skills.

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 2, 2002

You can make a real difference in a child's life. More than 30 percent of the students in the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. "Our children need to be equipped with necessary literacy and math skills if they are to graduate high school and become contributing members of the community," comments Carole Donahue, director of volunteers for LAUSD.

As part of this effort, LAUSD's Volunteer Office is applying for a one-million-dollar AmeriCorps national service grant. The local community has to match the grant with $150,000 in cash and $333,000 in-kind donations. The deadline for submitting the grant is December 18. The LAUSD AmeriCorps program would be one of the largest in the country.

AmeriCorps, created in 1993, is a network of national service programs that engage more than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters.
