Byline: The Register-Guard

ASHLEY MILLER, 13, of Vida, is a member of the Mount Batchelor Ski Team. The eighth grader at McKenzie Junior High School recently qualified in Idaho for the regional Junior Olympic championships, to be held at Mount Hood in March. She will compete in slalom and super-G events. A competitive skier for four years, Miller also plays for her school's Trico League basketball team.

BASEBALL, SOFTBALL UMPIRES SOUGHT - The Lane County Umpires Association is seeking baseball and softball officials to work high school games. No experience is necessary for this paid position. Training will be provided for the season that starts March 11. YOUTH HOCKEY TOURNAMENT - Lane Amateur Hockey Association's Meltdown Tournament for Squirt (11U) and Bantam (15U) age divisions is this weekend at Lane County Ice. The local LAHA Lightning bantam team plays at 5 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. Friday, 5:15 and 10:15 p.m. Saturday and possibly in Sunday's 12:45 p.m. championship game. LAHA will enter two squirt teams in the younger division, with the local teams playing at 6:15 and 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2:45, 4 and 9 p.m. Saturday, and possibly in Sunday morning's championship and third-place games.

SKI AND SPORTS CLUB TO MEET - Altair Ski and Sports Club will hold its monthly general meeting Wednesday at River Ranch Steak House, 2123 Franklin Blvd., Eugene. Hors d'oeuvres will be served at 6 p.m., orientation for guests and new members is at 6:30 and the meeting begins at 7. A $10 fee is collected. The event is open to anyone age 21 and older who is interested.

AYSO SPRING SOCCER REGISTRATION - Eugene Region 53 of American Youth Soccer Organization will hold spring registration at its new AYSO Soccer Spot, 4070 Stewart Road, just past Euphoria Chocolate, off Bertlesen Road. SELECT SOCCER TRYOUTS - Tryouts for the Oregon Adult Soccer Association's state select teams will take place in Corvallis this month. Open to all youth, collegiate and adult players, men's tryouts are Feb. 23 at 2:15 p.m. and March 16. Women's tryouts began Feb. 6 and will continue Feb. 13, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. All sessions are at the Oregon State University Indoor Center, 30th and Washington Way. YOUTH BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT - North American Youth Sports will hold a 10-bracket basketball tournament for fifth/sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth/10th and 11th/12th grade boys and girls teams, March 22-24 at Forest Grove High School. SATURDAY, FEB. 16 - River Road Park and Recreation District presents the 25th annual Couples Classic 5k road run and fitness walk beginning at River Road Park (1400 Lake Drive) at 9:30 a.m. Run entrants may compete as individuals, team or open team. Teams must consist of one male and one female. Open teams may be any age/sex combination. Team runners' times will be combined for a total time. Fitness walk entrants may enter as individuals or couples. Entry fees are $21 with sweatshirt through Feb. 12, $8 without shirt through race day. Register through Feb. 12 at River Road Park, Run Pro, PaceSetter Athletic, by mail or online at www.goodrace.com. Day-of-race registration is 8:15 a.m. to 9 a.m. only. SATURDAY, FEB. 23 - Coast Hills Running Club in conjunction with the Newport Seafood and Wine Festival will hold the annual Coast Festival 5k run in Newport.
