Pony Club organizations exist in over 30 countries worldwide. membership. Bailey Hanson is a first-year participant at the minimum age, but is already an experienced equestrian, who has had her own pony since age 2. Having two parents who participate in the Northwest rodeo circuit may be a reason for Hanson's young involvement with horses. Ashley Leavitt, by contrast, is one of the club's senior participants with nine years' membership. The Thurston Middle School eighth-grader comes from a family which has eight horses. Despite its name, Eugene Pony Club draws its membership largely from surrounding rural communities, including southern Benton and Linn counties, where the kids can keep their ponies on the farm or at least "in the backyard." But a few club members are "city kids" who board their ponies at local stables. Eugene Pony Club meets most Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Oregon Horse Center, 90751 Prairie Road (next to the rodeo arena). Membership is open to kids ages 5-17 whose pony is no taller than 14 hands (56 inches). Many of the club's older members graduate into local high school equestrian programs as they acquire larger animals. Eugene Pony Club is seeking to expand its membership, currently at about 30 kids, and may be contacted through president Cheryl Mobley at 935-5342.
