The purpose of this book is to provide a practical and philosophical basis for including children and adults with disabilities in community leisure services. Current legislation mandates the provision-for all individuals with disabilities- special education and related services, including recreation, in the least restrictive environment As part of the U.S. Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the least restrictive environment is identified as one of the six principles that govern the education of students with disabilities.  (a noninstitutional service approach). Large numbers of persons with disabilities who live and work in community environments wish to make use of community services. Barriers to participation are no longer insurmountable.

The book's major focus is on integrating existing services versus developing or providing additional segregated programs. The book describes a process that systematically produces guidelines guidelines,

for planning integrated community leisure services. The roles and responsibilities of professionals, care providers, and other "key players" are presented. An environmental analysis inventory provides a systematic approach for studying environments and for overcoming obstacles to participation in community recreation programs.  strategies and solutions to problems typically faced by the recreation professional are discussed. vital information forms necessary for step-by-step evaluation of participants and programs are provided. Examples of six exemplary programs also are presented. The appendixes include references, resources, blank forms, and an annotated bibliography An annotated bibliography is a bibliography that gives a summary of the research that has been done. It is still an alphabetical list of research sources. In addition to bibliographic data, an annotated bibliography provides a brief summary or annotation. .

The authors recommend a proactive approach to ensure that existing leisure services become accessible to children and adults with and without disabilities. No longer can society afford to exclude people from programs because of their special needs.

This book, with its step-by-step descriptions, is well organized and very useful and would be a valuable reference for those physical therapists involved with community leisure programs.
